Blog 12

In the article "In Defense Of Food", Michael  Pollan explains how much the food industry has changed. He points out that most companies increase the quantity of their food, while sacrificing quality, and sell it for a cheaper price so consumers think they are getting a bargain. I agree with Michael's saying, Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food because it means that the food nowadays is so artificial, if you showed it to one of your ancestors, they wouldn't know what it is.
Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. Michael Pollan explains that modern food nowadays are so processed and artificially made, that they would be unrecognizable as food to someone who has never seen them. For example, fruits have been the most popular foods for a long time because of the fact that they tasted good and they were good for you. Now fruits can now be chemically combined with other fruits. Scientists have combined fruits like mangos and tangerines to create "tangelos". I find this disturbing because fruit is supposed to be healthy and natural, if fruit isn't healthy anymore than you can imagine how unhealty other foods are.
Pay more and eat less. Pollan explains that the cheaper a food item is, the worse it is for you. For example, candy bars were never a healthy choice but they were a reasonable enough size to not be a threat. Now candy such as Hershey Bars comes in a king size that can serve up to three people, but are the same price as the smaller Hershey bars. Americans use to spend upt to twenty four percent of their income on food, now they spend less than ten percent. This proves that people like to buy larger, unhealthier quantities of food for less money instead of paying more for less.
They say that New Yorkers have a rock hard stomach. They say this because we are so used to eating unhealthy foods that our body can intake them without any harsh consequences. If someone from Europe were to eat a hot dog from a hot dog cart in manhattan, they would get really sick because they aren't used to eating such unhealthy food.  Food has taken a turn for the worst, pesticides and artificial flavoring has polluted even our healthiest food bad for you. That is why you shouldn't eat anything not recognizable as food by your great- great grandmother.
