Blog 19: Stuff

~"The journey from cotton crop to t-shirt is a long one that spans th globe and is filled with social and environmental costs that are hidden from view These certainly don't show up in the $5.99 price tag at target."  I think this means that t-shirts aren't as simple as forming cotton into the shape of a shirt, there is a long process behind it which a lot of people don't realize.
~"Each year we produce 25 million tons of cotton globally which is enough to make 15 t-shirts for every single person on earth." As you can see by this quote, we are not in short supply of cotton, we can billions of t-shirts a year, which is why i think that the price on t-shirts is fair. Hanes and jockey are two of the most popular providers of plain white t-shirts, they charge roughly about three dollars a shirt. Considering the long and strenuous process it takes to make them i think that the price is very fair. Diamonds on the other hand, are priced exactly as they should be. Diamonds are the hardest mineral known to man, they are so tough that if a jeweler wants to cut the diamond, he must do so with a laser. The reason they are so hard is that diamonds originally start out as a piece of coal in the earth and are crushed by the weight of a the weight of a mountain or land above it. The minerals are crushed together, compacting them so tightly that they become diamonds. These diamond then have to be dug for, finding diamonds is like finding a needle in a hay stack if the hay stack was the size of mt. Rushmore. That is why i believe diamonds are priced exactly as they should be.

Blog 17: Reflection on Blogging

-I'm missing the three artifacts but other than that i think i have everything.
-I don't see a huge difference in my writing, but i think it's improved a little bit since i started this class.
-i see improvement from blog 8 to blog 16.
- I could try to stay on subject. I have a really bad habit of connecting two ideas that don't really have anything to do with each other. Like in blog 11, i talked about why fast food is more convenient istead of talking about how unhealthy it was.
-I think blogging has helped me improve my writing because i can always look back at my earlier work and see all of my little improvements over time.

Blog 16~response

The primary goal of industrial farms is to maximize profits, even if it threatens the well-being of the workers. Big businesses only have one thing in mind, Money. These types of businesses will do anything to maximize profits even if it means an unsafe working environment for their employees. They hire illegal immigrants so that they can pay them minimum wage, and they fire good employees before their benefits kick in so they can save some money.
The primary goal of industrial farms is to maximize profits, even if it threatens the well-being of the workers. Meat packing plants make all of their money by paying their employees the bare minimum. Working in one of these factories is dangerous and strenuous, but the pay is about the same as someone who works in a McDonalds. The turnover rate in meat packing plants is about 80 percent a year. This means that 80 percent of the people working there will either quit or be fired within their first year.

The New Industrial Migrants (part 1 & 2)

Summary for part 1
In modern day meat packing plants,  there is a turnover rate of up to 80 percent a year. This means that 80 percent of the people working there will either quit or be fired within the first year. There are two main reasons why people are fired so often at these meat packing plants. They are either not doing a good job, or their boss fires them before their life insurance kicks in so that he can save some money.

Summary for part 2
This article talks about the amount of illegal immigrants working in meat packing plants. One quarter of all meatpacking workers are illegal immigrants. This is because the company sends recruiting teams to poor communities throughout the united states to find people who would work for the lowest wages. The companies do this becuase they say immigrants would be more reluctant to join unions.

I like that GrowNYC is a non-profit or organization. This means that all of their effort goes into helping the community and not making a profit. They provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers. They also have a program where they help New Yorkers learn how to recycle more and reduce waste. GrowNYC is one of the few companies that still care about the well being of the environment.

I learned that i have to write more and explain my ideas better.

"A tremendous amount of evidece shows that the brain does better when it's performing tasks in sequence rather than all at once". This quote comes from Nancy Jones' article, "how to do one thing at a time". The article explains the benefits of single-tasking and the downsides of multitasking. Nancy implies that multitasking is a bad idea most of the time.
The brain does better when it's performing tasks in sequence rather than all at once. I find this to be true, because, when performing multiple tasks at once less care goes into each task and mistakes are made. For example driving while talking on a cell phone extremely dangerous. Driving an talking on the phone are two fairly simple tasks if you do them in sequence. When you combine two tasks they are harder to do. Therefore, multitasking usually does more harm than good.
Multitasking does have it's downsides but if done correctly it will make you more productive. For example, when i wake up i like to make coffee and get ready at the same time on the stove then brushing my teeth until the water boils. Then i pour my coffee and take a shower while i wait for it to cool off. I think this is a good way  of multitasking.
Overall, multitasking is something that you should try to avoid. As you can see there are a few ways to multitask to save time but most of the time it does more harm than good. Each task should be given individual attention and hendled carefully.
