In the article "In Defense Of Food", Michael Pollan explains how much the food industry has changed. He points out that most companies increase the quantity of their food, while sacrificing quality, and sell it for a cheaper price so consumers think they are getting a bargain. I agree with Michael's saying, Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food because it means that the food nowadays is so artificial, if you showed it to one of your ancestors, they wouldn't know what it is.
Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. Michael Pollan explains that modern food nowadays are so processed and artificially made, that they would be unrecognizable as food to someone who has never seen them. For example, fruits have been the most popular foods for a long time because of the fact that they tasted good and they were good for you. Now fruits can now be chemically combined with other fruits. Scientists have combined fruits like mangos and tangerines to create "tangelos". I find this disturbing because fruit is supposed to be healthy and natural, if fruit isn't healthy anymore than you can imagine how unhealty other foods are.
Pay more and eat less. Pollan explains that the cheaper a food item is, the worse it is for you. For example, candy bars were never a healthy choice but they were a reasonable enough size to not be a threat. Now candy such as Hershey Bars comes in a king size that can serve up to three people, but are the same price as the smaller Hershey bars. Americans use to spend upt to twenty four percent of their income on food, now they spend less than ten percent. This proves that people like to buy larger, unhealthier quantities of food for less money instead of paying more for less.
They say that New Yorkers have a rock hard stomach. They say this because we are so used to eating unhealthy foods that our body can intake them without any harsh consequences. If someone from Europe were to eat a hot dog from a hot dog cart in manhattan, they would get really sick because they aren't used to eating such unhealthy food. Food has taken a turn for the worst, pesticides and artificial flavoring has polluted even our healthiest food bad for you. That is why you shouldn't eat anything not recognizable as food by your great- great grandmother.

In "Let Them Eat Fat" , Critser argues that fast food chains, such as McDonalds, serve food that is mostly made up of fat. Most people know how unhealthy fast food is but they keep eating it because of how cheap and easy it is to get. To eat in a restaurant, you would wait about thirty minutes for your food to be prepared. Critser implies that because the food is cheap, people will never stop eating fast food.
The most interesting idea in this article is that fast food chains, such as McDonalds, have grown more aggressive in their targeting of poor inner-city communities. McDonalds reastaurants are everywhere, especially in poorer neighborhoods. What keeps people coming back to McDonalds are the cheap prices and large quantities of food. Fast food is just that, fast. It is so much quicker to get your food at McDonalds than at a diner or a restaurant. Greg Critser's article is all about shedding light on how unhealthy fast food is for you.
McDonalds makes most of it's money from people who either can't afford to eat anywhere else, or people who don't like to wait long for their food. Fast food restaurants serve such large quantities of food for low price, that is what keeps people coming back. For example, would you rather pay ten dollars for a burger and french fries at a diner, or get a burger and fries at McDonalds for about two dollars and change?
The idea of having your food served to you about thirty seconds after you order it is what makes fast food so appealing. For example, last friday I took my mom out to lunch and then took her shopping. The restaurant we went to had us waiting for almost an hour for our food and her favorite store close because we were late. If we had went to a fast food restaurant, we would have gotten our food in a few minutes. This is why fast food is so popular, because of how fast it's served.
In sum, should try to avoid the temptation of fast food. Just because it is easier to eat fast food doesn't mean it is the best thing to do. We shouldn't ignore the fact that fast food is extremely unhealthy. Greg Critser took his time to write an article about the disadvantages of fatty food, th least we can do is try to limit our fast food intake.

Where The Whale Be at? The Place of Race & Racism In The Discussion of Environmentalism.
This passage talks about a very controversial subject, Environmental racism. Environmental racism is when a place that is populated my mostly colored people gets treated differently than other places. For example, parks near colored neighborhoods are much smaller than other parks. In these neighborhoods, supermarkets and health food stores are in short supply, forcing people to shop at mom and pop stores. The end result is the stores charge alot more for their products because the store owners know that the people dont have any other option. This causes alot of health issues because they don't have access to healthy food. In sum, Environmental racism has been around for a very long time, some believe it will gradually fade away over time, other think that nothing will change.

Blog 9 Summary.
In part I of The Meatrix, Leo meets moopheus. Moopheus tells Leo that he is living in a fantasy and that nothing is real. He offers him a blue pill and a red pill just like in the movie The Matrix. The blue pill would have allowed leo to stay in the meatrix, and the red pill would show him the truth. Leo takes the red pill and wakes up out of his fantasy. He is now in a modern day farm where pigs are packed together as tightly as possible and live under cruel conditions. He learns that all farms are now owned by big industries. All the animals are given antibiotics to prevent diseases caused by their harsh living conditions. These antibiotics are making the animals become immune to mwdicine and soon all of the farm animals will have diseases that are incurable. Leo decides to do something about it and fight the big indistries by joining moopheus in the battle against the meatrix.
In part II of the Meatrix, Moopheus tells leo that he has freed over ten million minds from the meatrix. Moopheus shows Leo how much better farms were before the big industries took over, and how dirty and unhealthy they are now. For example, in the modern day dairy factory the cows aren't milked by people, they are milked by machines. When the cows are no longer able to produce milk they are sent off to be slaughtered for meat. They pump up the cows with artificial hormones to make them produce more milk and make them bigger so there is more meat. They are also fed cows blood when they are young. (As moopheus sai" the dead are fed back to the living") Moopheus is kidnapped by the agents of the meatrix and he tells leo to stop the dairy farms....
In part II 1/2 of the Meatrix, Leo and the chicken rescue moopheus from the agents and learn about the meat packing industries on the way. They see how poorly the meat is taken care of. The dead cows leak feces onto the other meats, infecting them before they are even cut. The workers get injured because of how fast the meat goes through the packing process. To maximize profits, the industries speed up the machines which slaughter and cut up the cows. The meat goes through the machines so fast that it isn't taken care of as well as it should be. When they speed up the process they minimize safety and the workers get hurt. E. coli is also a big problem when the meat isn' t taken care of properly. Many people suffer because of how greedy the meat packing industry is. The meatrix videos are a clever way of showing people how their food is prepared, and shows them the alternative to these kinds of farms, which is organic foods.

Cyberbullying is more serious than people think. A college student committed suicide because his roommate recorded him without him knowing. Dharun Ravi activated Tyler Clementi's webcam without him knowing and caught intumate moments of tyler and his partner. Dharun put these videos on the internet, and when tyler saw them he jumped off of the George Washington Bridge. Dharun never would have recorded Tyler face to face, so he used the internet to record him. This is why cyberbullying is so dangerous. people do things on the internet that they would never do in the real world.
The internet was designed to be a helpful tool. Some people abuse the power that the internet gives them. For example, i purchased an i-pod on Ebay last year. After the seller received my payment, he closed his account and took the money and i never got the i-pod. This proves that people do stuff on the internet that they wouldn't do in the real world. If i bought an ipod from someone face to face, there is no way that they would take the money and leave because they want to avoid confontation. That is why most bullying happens over the internet, because it can't be traced back to them.
In conclusion, cyberbullies are usually people who get bullied in the real world but are too afraid to do anything about it. So they get on their computers and they bully someone else. What happened with Tyler is tragic, a stupid joke ended up making him take his own life. Online bullies may never know how much pain they're inflicting.
