Where The Whale Be at? The Place of Race & Racism In The Discussion of Environmentalism.

This passage talks about a very controversial subject,  Environmental racism. Environmental racism is when a place that is populated my mostly colored people gets treated differently than other places. For example, parks near colored neighborhoods are much smaller than other parks. In these neighborhoods, supermarkets and health food stores are in short supply, forcing people to shop at mom and pop stores. The end result is the stores charge alot more for their products because the store owners  know that the people dont have any other option. This causes alot of health issues because they don't have access to healthy food. In sum, Environmental racism has been around for a very long time, some believe it will gradually fade away over time, other think that nothing will change.

Blog 9 Summary.

In part I of The Meatrix, Leo meets moopheus. Moopheus tells Leo that he is living in a fantasy and that nothing is real. He offers him a blue pill and a red pill just like in the movie The Matrix. The blue pill would have allowed leo to stay in the meatrix, and the red pill would show him the truth. Leo takes the red pill and wakes up out of his fantasy. He is now in a modern day farm where pigs are packed together as tightly as possible and live under cruel conditions. He learns that all farms are now owned by big industries. All the animals are given antibiotics to prevent diseases caused by their harsh living conditions. These antibiotics are making the animals become immune to mwdicine and soon all of the farm animals will have diseases that are incurable. Leo decides to do something about it and fight the big indistries by joining moopheus in the battle against the meatrix.

In part II of the Meatrix, Moopheus tells leo that he has freed over ten million minds from the meatrix. Moopheus shows Leo how much better farms were before the big industries took over, and how dirty and unhealthy they are now. For example, in the modern day dairy factory the cows aren't milked by people, they are milked by machines. When the cows are no longer able to produce milk they are sent off to be slaughtered for meat. They pump up the cows with artificial hormones to make them produce more milk and make them bigger so there is more meat. They are also fed cows blood when they are young. (As moopheus sai" the dead are fed back to the living") Moopheus is kidnapped by the agents of the meatrix and he tells leo to stop the dairy farms....

In part II 1/2 of the Meatrix, Leo and the chicken rescue moopheus from the agents and learn about the meat packing industries on the way. They see how poorly the meat is taken care of. The dead cows leak feces onto the other meats, infecting them before they are even cut. The workers get injured because of how fast the meat goes through the packing process. To maximize profits, the industries speed up the machines which slaughter and cut up the cows. The meat goes through the machines so fast that it isn't  taken care of as well as it should be. When they speed up the process they minimize safety and the workers get hurt. E. coli is also a big problem when the meat isn' t taken care of properly. Many people suffer because of how greedy the meat packing industry is. The meatrix videos are a clever way of showing people how their food is prepared, and shows them the alternative to these kinds of farms, which is organic foods.

Cyberbullying is more serious than people think. A college student committed suicide because his roommate recorded him without him knowing. Dharun Ravi activated Tyler Clementi's webcam without him knowing and caught intumate moments of tyler and his partner. Dharun put these videos on the internet, and when tyler saw them he jumped off of the George Washington Bridge. Dharun never would have recorded Tyler face to face, so he used the internet to record him. This is why cyberbullying is so dangerous. people do things on the internet that they would never do in the real world.
The internet was designed to be a helpful tool. Some people abuse the power that the internet gives them. For example, i purchased an i-pod on Ebay last year. After the seller received my payment, he closed his account and took the money and i never got the i-pod. This proves that people do stuff on the internet that they wouldn't do in the real world. If i bought an ipod from someone face to face, there is no way that they would take the money and leave because they want to avoid confontation. That is why most bullying happens over the internet, because it can't be traced back to them.
In conclusion, cyberbullies are usually people who get bullied in the real world but are too afraid to do anything about it. So they get on their computers and they bully someone else. What happened with Tyler is tragic, a stupid joke ended up making him take his own life. Online bullies may never know how much pain they're inflicting.

Blog 7: I Am A Cyborg

A cyborg is someone who works well with computers and other technology. I believe i am a cyborg because i can't go a day without my blackberry, my i-pod, or my computer. I've gotten so used to having them with me all day that i can't imagine my life without them. Everyone relies on some type of technology. I believe that people wouldn't be able to function without certain devices. Whether you rely on a cell phone or a computer, it's safe to say that we've all become addicted to some kind of machine.
Machines are changing the way we do everyday things. MP3 players make your daily commute a little more bearable by letting you listen to music on a small, portable device. Most people are cyborgs and don't even know it. If you took away all the machines in a  persons life, simple tasks would become much harder. For example, i like to check my credit card balance online instead of going to the bank. If i had to walk to the bank every time i wanted to check my balance that would waste a lot of my time. People who choose to work alongside machines are always going to have an advantage over someone who likes to do things the old fashioned way.
Although technology tends to make most a lot of things easier, there are certain things that require a human touch. I was calling T-Mobile the other day to change my texting plan and i was talking to a recording for about twenty minutes before it finally put me through to a real person. This is a perfect example of machines doing something a person should be doing. Although machines are very useful, they can't be expected to interact with people the way a human can. They have no emotions and they can't cater to your specific needs, they can only do what they are programmed to do.
Their are pros and cons when it comes to machines. But in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons. The benefits of working alongside machines are too great to stop using them. My life is much easier because of two little devices that i carry with me every day. If something so small can help me get through the day then i'm sure a computer can do something much greater, like keep a business running properly. I would say i am a cyborg and i advise other people to become cyborgs too.

"Brainstorming about Technology"

-Tool
-Technology
-Cyborg

When i hear the word tool i automatically thinkof something that will make your current task easier.
When i hear technology i think of computers and televisions.
I think a cyborg is someone who is so used to doing something a certain way that he becomes more of a machine than a person.

Everyday devices.
-Ipod
-Phone
-metrocard
-Debit card
-Drivers license

There are certain thing that i use everyday that i can't live without. I always need my ipod to make the train rides more enjoyable. I need my phone so i can stay in touch with people, check the weather, go on facebook etc.My metrocard is a must because i need to get to school and back everyday. My debit card is also important if i run out of cash. And my drivers license if i have to drive or show some identification.

Blog 4 Revised

Not finished yet. still have to edit.

Summary of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”

In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” Socrates argued that sometimes people don't want to accept change because it can be scary. He implies that most people are unaware of greater truths outside of their comfort zone. He uses the PRISON-HOUSE to create a visual example of people who live in IGNORANCE. His story shows that people are creatures of habit, they do not want to accept that there is more to life than what you're used to. Change is FRIGHTENING and Socrates was exiled for thinking outside of the box. If someone refuses to accept the truth and would rather live in their own secluded fantasy, than they are a living example that "Ignorance is bliss".

My Place in the Cave

Sometimes people don't want to accept change because it can be scary.   In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave Socrates describes a cave in which people are chained at the neck and feet. They  cannot turn their heads to see what is behind them. They can only see shadows cast on the wall in front of them. There is a fire on the opposite side of the cave that casts shadows of people transporting all types of animals and materials. They cannot see the faces only shadows. The shadows sometime appear to be talking  but they are mostly silent. If one of these people were to somehow free themselves and see the sun and the outside world, would they accept the new reality  or live in ignorance thinking that there is no life outside of the cave.
Most people are not aware of realities that differ from their own. They believe that they are living how they are supposed to. If I was one of the people chained in the cave, the shadows would be all that I knew. The sun and the outside world would mean nothing to me because I do not know that they exist.
After a life of darkness and solitude, if you saw the sun and a chance at a new life, would you be able to resist? I would be overwhelmed with joy and excitement. This discovery would make me question everything. I would most likely become a philosopher because I would always be questioning reality and why we are here. How can you go back to a one sided life knowing that there is much more to discover?
Although there are a lot of positive things about knowing things other people don’t know. Would anyone believe what you tell them about your discoveries. Would they question your sanity? Philosophers take the risk of being exiled for their work because it causes other people to question their reality. Making people question things like reality can be dangerous because they have to leave their comfort zone and explore new things to see if they are true. People are creatures of habit and it takes a philosopher to make them change their way of thinking.

The Truman Show and the Allegory of the Cave have alot of the same ideas. In The Truman Show, the main character is unaware that his entire life has been staged. Truman was legally adopted by a corporation when he was born and they have created the world's largest set (Seahaven) for him. The people who he considers friends and famaily are all paid actors. In The Allegory Of The Cave, the main character is a man who has been in a cave for his entire life. He has been chained at the neck and feet so that he cannot turn around, he can only stare at the wall in front of him. Behind him is a walkway and a fire. The fire casts shadows of people walking by and he can only see the shadows on the wall. Just like in The Truman Show, the main character can only see part of the real world. Truman sees actors portray fake emotions and in the Allegory Of The Cave the main character only sees the shadows of people. Both of them are only seeing part of the big picture. In The Truman Show an old girlfreind tries to tell him the truth, that he is actually on a television show and that nothing is real. In The Allegory Of The Cave, the man sees the sun for the first time and he starts to question life as well. Both stories have symbols that inspire the characters to find out if there is more to life. In the Truman Show it his his old girlfriend and in The Allegory Of The Cave it is the sun. Although the two stories are similar in some way, they also have very different ideas. In The Truman Show, Truman is trying to escape his phony life and start a real one. In the Allegory OF the Cave the man is more focused on sharing what he has learned with others so they can experience what he has. Both stories are insporational, but somehow dissapointing. The allegory of the cave ended and noone else in the cave believed the stories of the sun, they just remained ignorant and stayed in the cave, and in The Truman show, he found a way out of his old life but he will probably be lost and confused when he starts his new one. So even though both stories are very different they both share some of the same ideas.
